Bangkok Dosa Quest

To cut a potentially much longer story short, the aim was to find Bangkok’s best dosa, an Indian staple food as you know. Usually served with a coconut and coriander chutney, dosa is a light food, fun to eat – and delicious.

The quest first brought me to Phahurat, Bangkok’s Little India. If you’ve been to India before Phahurat is quite an experience with all the colors, odors and smells. I found some dosa – see the top and last photo below -, but the real thing?

For the real thing you don’t have to venture all the way to Little India. An Indian restaurant by the telling name Dosa King offers it all, the whole variety of the main ingredients rice and lentil batter a decent dosa – or idli or uttapham for that – is made out of.

Dosa King’s true little (southern) India is right at your doorstep at Sukhumvit Soi 11/1. Owner Anand takes pride in the perfection of this most Indian of Indian foods. But that’s not it: “Even Indians ask for variations”, he says.

Which is why you’ll find the tempting Pizza Dosa on the menu, a fusion of East & West with tomato sauce and fresh, unprocessed cottage cheese. See the rest of the dosa offerings here. Shot below is Dosa King’s unique Paneer Tikka Dosa.

My favorite? A plain simple Masala Dosa served with onion and potato filling. Or better: Rava Dosa Masala, a mixture of semolina and rice flour with onion & potato filling, sambar and chutney sending you to culinary heaven for a meager 130 baht.

And don’t leave without a lassi.

    I love dosas and especially with tamarind chutney, just the thought of it makes me drools! So thanks for this recommendation.

    I do miss a lamb chicken madras that I can dip my garlic nan into! Any suggestions?

    Thanks for this post! I was gonna comment about Dosa King myself – and then clicked on “Read more” and saw that you’ve already mentioned it yourself.

    I was regular visitor to Dosa King while it was on Soi 19 (opposite Montien hotel and Robinson). But then they moved and I didn’t know where till I read your post.

    I tell you honestly: the quality of food (for S. and even N. Indian dishes) they have is THE BEST in town. Not only dosa – many other things too. I spent several years living in India, ate at many places there, do cook sometime Indian food and knew/know friends who do it too. So, I have a pretty good idea of authentic fine quality of Indian food.

    And I can say that Dosa King certainly has class. Well, at least when I ate there last time (while still on Soi 19).

    So, now I’ll surely visit them on Soi 11 …

    BTW – might be a bit off topic here (not about dosa, there is some small family-run restaurant in the same area which has excellent Italian food! It is somehwere behind the Ambassador Hotel, on one small lane connecting the two sois between which the hotel is. Somehow talking about authentic food (Dosa King) has reminded me of that other restaurant – worth visiting! I forgot the name though, but it is mentioned by many travel books, as well as the “Restaurants of BKK” guide (published annually).

    antipadshist, the Italian place you speak of is called Limoncello, serving the best traditional thin crust brick oven pizzas in town. Opposite the Ambassador hotel in an alleyway off Soi 11. Dosa King rocks too, I go 3 times a week and I’m not even vegetarian!
