It’s Euro 2008 Showtime!

Forget politics. It’s all pleasant football-mania from June 7th to 29th: Europe’s best national teams, except the English, aim for the European crown. You’re in Bangkok and don’t want to cheer your favorite Euro 2008 team in the loneliness of your home, get out of your cave. Here’s what you can do:

We’re sure that some watering holes will be open – we keep you posted. But if you don’t mind authentic Thai cheerfulness, you’ll find Bangkok’s biggest and busiest eight meter LED live video screens at Central World Plaza and Future Park Rangsit.

It will be party time, the promoters expect a thousand people a match – with the first match each starting at 11 pm BKK time, the second at 1.45 am. See? You may even head directly to work from Central World or Future Park.

Not that you want to do that every day, but before the clashes in faraway Austria and Switzerland live Thai pop will warm up the crowd. No, unfortunately no coyote dancers, as the promoters assured me.

Right here on absolutely you have the detailed tournament schedule and over at Central World and Future Park there’s lots of animation with music and live bands and games and lucky draws and food and drinks – and big sponsors, such as ThaiBev, making the beer at least more affordable. 40 baht a can of Federbräu, quite fair.

The live feed is the normal Thai broadcast, so be prepared for lots of “ohooooooo!” – the commonly most profound analysis of Thai sports commentators. And with each broadcast there are three of them.

Bars like Gulliver’s Tavern will pamper their guests with the English satellite feed from South Africa. But business as usual. Bars have to close at 1 am. Most pubs will show the matches but within regular closing times. You’re the first to know if we hear about some bending of rules.

Here some confirmed venues:

- Jersey Pub at Sukhumvit Soi 6 has the games every night until 6 am … (thanks for that wave Dave).

- The Pullman Bangkok will broadcast all the matches in the Wine Pub: FREE BEER (you heard it right) during the first half of the opening match. After that Buy 1 Get 1 Free during each match on selected beers.

- The Dream Hotel, Bangkok’s premium Boutique Hotel, shows the matches with some Federbräu promotion and “special Euro Snacks.”

If you venture to Central World or Future Park Rangsit, here’s the daily schedule:

4 pm – 6 pm: Rerun of last evening’s matches
9.45 pm – 10.15 pm: Live music
11 pm – 1.45 am: Live broadcast or rerun
1.45 am – 3:30 am: Live broadcast

If you’re stuck at home and an adept of Thai TV, Channel 7 and Channel 9 bring daily special Euro 2008 broadcasts in addition to the live matches, starting each day at 6 am. Check with your TV program.

If the matches are too late for you, watch a daily cut-together of the best scenes on Channel 7 from 6.00 – 6.30 am and Channel 9 from 7.30 – 8.00 am.

I would like to check out football at Central World Monday night.

But how do I know which match they are going to broadcast since there are two matches at the same time.

Tom: They show Austria – Germany, France – Italy and Russia – Sweden. The right choices I’d say.
