OMG

A problematic ground is always a fertile ground for religions. From a church’s official press release: “More than 36,000 Christians representing more than 1,700 churches across Thailand are prepared to implement My Hope, a successful outreach project of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA). Evangelistic meetings will be taking place in homes, churches schools and various other venues all over the country December 17th to 19th.”

Christian missionaries are especially aggressive along the border with Myanmar, now they go more local: “In a country where only one-half of one percent of the population belongs to a evangelical church, the need for the Gospel is tremendous,” said Bill Conard, vice president of international ministries at BGEA. “But the church is ready, and we are eagerly anticipating what God will do through His people.” This new campaign My Hope Thailand mainly targets the local segment:

“My Hope Thailand is an effort driven by local Christians who want their communities to know God’s love in Jesus Christ. These Christians, referred to as “Matthews,” (recalling the disciple who invited friends to his home to meet Jesus – Matthew 9), will host neighbors, relatives and friends to watch a thought-provoking TV program or video, which feature sermons from Franklin and Billy Graham dubbed into the Thai language, as well as testimonies and songs from Thai Christians (…)”

Let me add a word or two. It is a tragic irony that the most religious people anywhere in the world of any belief you’ll neither find among those Christians nor any other hardcore followers of any faith. Truly religious people seem to not be aware of any higher being. Truly religious people lead a humble life lead by the care of and respect for others without depending on a given set of rules and traditions. I’ve seen more religious people in football clubs than in dedicated religious circles, and believe me, I spent some time among them.

So what’s the purpose of this latest crusade? Thailand makes it very easy for missionaries to roam abount. Christianity has some solid roots here and you’d be amazed how many of Thailand’s leading people are not Buddhist, but Christian. If you wanna hit the ground running and follow this latest mass conversion attempt of infidels there’s a dedicated blog for you: On the Ground in Thailand, My Hope in Action, broadcasting the Gospel message to this nation of 60 million potential proselytes.

    And I can only hope that these Christian missionaries will get themselves on the first flight out of Thailand and leave these people to their own beliefs and convictions rather than proselytizing them. Perhaps they would be better off back in their homelands ministering to the masses where adultry, divorce, addiction and corruption runs rampant. I’ll never understand the unbridled arrogance that makes people think that they have the “only” way for others to live and believe.

    These missionaries are the most annoying things I have seen in ages. They come on the corner of Asoke and Sukhumvit with huge speakers and prodcast for ever and ever.

    I wish they would practice what they preach and leave people in peace and with their belief.

    Go home and stay there.

    Missionaries = sanctified chauvinism

    Destroyers of culture.

    Self-rightous arrogance.

    Thai people have a spirituality. One that is older than Christianity.

    Maybe Buddhists should consider a missionary effort in the West?

    It should not be forgotten that there were once missionaries coming to Thailand from Sri Lanka, introducing a foreign religion into Thailand called Buddhism … and plenty of settlers from China to the north bringing all kinds of beliefs, shrines and superstitions, even plastic cats which wave one arm for good luck in business … and plenty from India too with all their elephant statues and gods with four faces and many arms …
