Sodom & Gomorrah

Here’s a little photo report of Jatujak, of the there caged and tied down animals’ Sodom & Gomorrah. There’s hardly anything you can’t find at Jatujak.
And no pet that isn’t for sale, be it dogs, cats, birds, fishes, scorpions, turtles, spiders, snakes, etc. In apocalyptic conditions that is.
It’s heartbreaking to stroll along Jatujak’s animal shops. Animal rights, like other basic rights, are no speciality of Thailand.
The fancy dogs may enjoy air conditioning. Most creatures barely survive.
I wonder how many animals don’t make it each week. But then again, somehow it’s also a visually highly fascinating place of masters and subjects.
Some of the images – shot with an Olympus E-P1 & 17mm pancake – are uploaded in larger resolution over at the Gallery:

Another wonderful example of Buddhist compassion as practiced in the Land of Hypocrites.
While it’s not a pretty sight to see It’s hard to look at the Thai animal markets without realizing that the same problems also persist in the so called civilized countries such as America and Great Britain.
As long as people want fluffy bunny rabbits, puppies and cats there will always be animal markets and mills around the world.
I agree Talen. Some of the pet farms in the U.S. are horrific. Disposable lives.
Come on Dan, they look so cute, they can’t be unhappy.
Great shots, Dan … but I have to ask … what the hell is that creature in the last photo?
Thanks Patrick.
You’ve got me there.
Looked like a squirrel or some kind of squirrel. These would be classic squirrels, or not?!

Just heartbreaking to see animals being treated this way. Thailand is far from unique in this respect. Animals are treated as commodities; not as living creatures who also feel pain and distress.

can be judged by the ways its animals are treated

So true.
