I actually believe in the death penalty under certain circumstances, but yesterday's events are in-human and unacceptable. Disgusting is probably a much more appropriate description, although backward and primitive also fit the picture. Reminds me of twelfth-century Europe.

"No one knew it was going to happen as it was kept a secret from everyone."

The prisoner and their relatives should have had two weeks to tham jai before the execution. Other prisoners on death row shouldn't have to live with the fear that this may be their last day. The punishment is the death penalty, not psychological torture. If torture is going to be added to the punishment then why not use the rack and tongs like they did in the Dark Ages.

Is the justice system in Thailand (although famous for being backward - a prime minister deposed for cooking!!!) so barbaric as to proscribe torture to offenders?

I agree with the author. This is a very sad day for Thailand.
