"The Thai people showed that there was something more important to them than democracy when they accepted the coup against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in 2006 because it was thought to be sanctioned by the king."

Not sure what he was trying to say here. Did he mean the coup was thought to be staged at the request of the king, or did he simply say people accepted the coup because the king approved of it afterwards? To me, the latter explanation seems more plausible than the former. The writer could have elaborated a bit more.

"In some countries sleeping naked on the beach as a sign of protest is considered democracy - if that is democracy then this is not needed."

Sure. Coming from a man who likes to accuse his opponents of "sodomy" in order to get rid of them ... it's a great proof of asian wiseness and zen bullshit. ;-)

I mean, Mahathir is without any doubt a great thinker. We, as the humanity, certainly need him.
;-)

I don't buy this article. It leaves me ... cold.

And we can surely dispute some parts, for instance: "The Thai people showed that there was something more important to them than democracy when they accepted the coup against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in 2006 because it was thought to be sanctioned by the king."

It's a factual error (Thaksin party won the elections in December 2006!).

It's certainly fashionable (it was before too) to show the West a mirror and critizise it.

But, Asian people should wake up and answer a few questions. What do they have? What do they propose? Alternatives? Any?

A big freaking void. Nothing.

My point: Are corruption, cronyism, violence etc. good for the East because the West condemns those concepts?

Does the East absolutely have to reject Western ideas ... just because they are Western?

We should ask the Burmese what they are thinking about it ...

This article reminds me ofthe ideology of decolonization in the Africa of the 60s ... The White Man was guilty. Sure. Hands up.

Oh boy, we saw the result during the next decades! If the White Man was guilty (and he was probably to some extend) ... how can we define the Black Man's actions in Africa after that?

Words are probably lacking ...

So again, I've got the feeling that this article warms up some old lunacies, just repackaged for the East.

And to this mirror rethoric, we should - as Westerners - answer with another mirror: What do you propose? What are the ideas you as Asians are nourishing? Where do youself want to go?

And then, we would probably wait for a long time ... before we ever get any answer. And even any reflection from ... the mirror.
