The Great Mystery Of Siam Park
You heard it. On Saturday, January 12th, 28 children were injured in Bangkok – four critically – when part of an elevated amusement park watercourse collapsed at Siam Park.
A reader of ours, an engineer, happened to visit Siam Park the very next day on Sunday. Unaware of what had happened the day before.
Monday morning, back at the office, he learned to his eerie astonishment about the accident at Siam Park. Where he had wondered why everything was so quiet.
Suddenly, everything made sense.
He was wondering, the reader wrote us, why Siam Park was deserted. The damaged slide, he said, had been closed. But it wasn’t clear why.
And because the slide was closed there was ample time to have a second look around. And a third look.
“We had a look at the other rides. And got a strange feeling. The condition of the bridges over the watercourses was quite desolate. All the supporting constructions are massively rusted.”
“Double T-bars,” he writes, “are torn open lengthwise.”

“We still had no idea why Siam Park was that quiet. But we told ourselves: ‘Things look rather dangerous in this park!’”
As we all know, the authorities promised a harsh, relentless inquiry into what caused the accident. As at Siam Park the great raising of eyebrows broke out, as a great mystery had to be solved.
For our reader, the cause of the accident was as clear as alphabet soup: “A simple look at the underneath of the rides shows where the problem lies. A clear case of incompetence – or even worse: ignorant maintenance.”

Reminds me of the recent cave tragedy in Khao Sok National Park, where several Western tourists drowned, including three children.
The government had promised a harsh, relentless inquiry into what caused the accident … Sounds familiar?
The accident happened in October. In December – even if officially still “closed” -, the cave was open for business again.

And when I come to think about it, my wife wanted to go there … to have some fun (or rather to die?)!
Wow!
I was just about to bring my class there but after reading this … I’m not so sure.
Someone should take action!
Those poor children …
