The Homecoming Of Thaksin
In a carefully choreographed show of the faithful former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will be welcomed back to Thailand on Thursday, February 28th, at ETA 9.40 am at Suvarnabhumi airport.
Probably “politely” arrested upon arrival Thaksin will then head to the Supreme Court and apply for bail – while the Thai voters finally get what they’re paid for.
Thaksin’s former lawyer and current foreign minister though, Noppadon Pattama, insists that Thaksin would be back by private jet – and not necessarily on Thursday by TG 603 from Hong Kong, as the Thaksin-friendly website Hi-Thaksin.net reported (which is not to be mixed up with Hi-Thaksin.com).
Security fears? Other sources say that Thaksin hurries back because HE Samak Sundaravej has already become “too aggressive” – meaning that HE Samak has become a premier too independent for not being the real king maker himself, causing rifts within the PPP.
Whatever day Thaksin returns: Expect a carnival of emotions at this hero’s, if not martyr’s homecoming.
After one and a half years in exile Thaksin will land at his very own prestige project Suvarnabhumi airport – a child of his own he hasn’t laid eyes upon to this day.
Expect a whiny-voiced Thaksin, as back then – remember? – when he had asked for “another chance”.
February 28th – chosen for its auspicious number – will be a tearful day for many of the nostalgic Thaksin supporters who remember all the good deeds and couldn’t care less about the lesser good deeds, while HE Samak is told who the real boss really is.
For others Thaksin’s return is a call to the arms.
Many fear for Thaksin’s safety.
As much as he is loved, as much he is hated and there is talk that Thaksin, for his own good, would better stay away from the country.
The Democrats urge calm, PAD threatens to hold protests and the generals are nowhere to be seen.
But Thaksin will be ready to face trial to face all those allegations. The last shadows of these allegations though seem to evaporate more and more in our Thailand where the separation of powers remains a great unknown.
This man is innocent.
Question though is: A somebody who just got his red diplomatic passport back, does Thaksin enjoy certain diplomatic privileges, or even immunity?
With the country back in the hands of the great puppet master there’s a much stronger sense of resistance though within the ranks of the media and civil society to not give in that easily this time to anew attempts of intimidation.
Thailand is back to a different square one.
And the kingdom will soon most likely witness how Thaksin prostrates himself in front of the King.
Maybe Thaksin has learned a lesson, for the good of the country.
