Wine Harvest Escapade

Ever dreamed of dancingly squashing ripe grapes in a huge barrel with your bare feet? Your dream may become partly true as the PB Valley Khao Yai Winery holds the 2009 Wine Harvest Festival on January 31st up in misty Khao Yai.

Well, at least you’ll cut some grapes yourselves and have lots of other fun. There are two programs. Afternoon activities start at 4 pm, show you how wine is made and are free. For the evening program with a grand dinner included tickets @ 1,000 baht are required.

Thailand doesn’t come more European than that. There’s a wide choice of wineries up in Khao Yai, but together with GranMonte the PB Winery belongs to the leading estates. They produce not only drinkable, they produce internationally acclaimed wines.

PB Winery is a brainchild of founder Piya Bhirombhakdi, who has his hands in quite some other businesses. Yep, he’s the president of Boonrawd Brewery, Thailand’s biggest brewery and makers of Singha beers, and founder of the “great little” airline PB Air and creator of Krabi’s Pulay Beach Resort. See? All PB, like Piya Bhirombhakdi.

Now regarded as a father of “New Latitude Wines” Khun Piya is a true epicure, but has remained humble all along. With this year’s harvest festival his winery is going one step further: PB Winery has for the first time teamed up with GranMonte and the winemakers of Village Farm.

That’s why the event is actually called the Khao Yai Wine Region Harvest Festival 2009.

This first festival is held at the estates of PB Winery, with each vineyard presenting the best they have to offer. The 4-course sit-down dinner will feature a salad from Village Farm accompanied by the winemaker’s most matching wine, followed by GranMonte’s best and PB Winery’s best.

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but having seen first-hand the deplorable labor conditions of wineries in the West, I shudder to think of the conditions the Thai (or more probably illegal Burmese) field hands must endure.

  4. So now that it’s over do you have any photos? With my little camera and seat way in the back all I got was a couple pics of the lovely musician ladies (see here). You can see how far I was from the stage. Maybe you got a few shots of that cutie MC.

Well AS, to be honest, I screwed up completely at the last shooting with my old camera.

All those girls, the violin and flute and cello musicians – and then Poi, the MC, they were too beautiful, I did not want to endanger that beauty by using flash photography.

You don’t wanna see the result. But if you saw a guy running around with a big camera and refusing to use flash, that was me.
